About Our Family
K Bar K Meats started as the dream of Kent and Karen Black.
The first cattle were purchased in 1986 as a small commercial herd. In 1987, our first purebred cattle were purchased from J.J. Smiddy of Sulphur Springs, Texas. Two cows, a calf and eleven heifers with Stick, Enforcer and Victor bloodlines made up the foundation of our herd. A bull was added soon after and we were in the Polled Hereford business.
We soon began to grow with the acquisition of land and cattle. Our next bull came from Bob Young of Lone Oak. BFY VICTOR BANNER X16 proved to be a great purchase because of the great foundation built in our herd. We purchased cattle from sales like the Texas Harvest, Northeast Texas and Texas All Star.
As the 1990s rolled along, we began growing and meeting many new friends. Montie Soules of Star Lake proved to be a great friend and mentor. Our first bull partnership was a young bull named STAR EMBLEM WS 108D. EMBLEM did a tremendous job here and across the country and his impact is still felt on the ranch. He is buried near my home and has a monument made by my dear friend Dennis Hulsey.
About the mid 1990s, my daughter Brette and I traveled to Fort Payne, Alabama to the Dixieland Delight. From the first time Randy and Kelly Owen met us at the gate, they have always treated us like family. We purchased the best cow we have ever owned, TRM, TRM JELLO 7182, the first time we visited. A MISSILE daughter out of the great TRM E44 SIS 334, maybe the best cow ever at TRM, JELLO never failed. We had great natural and ET calves out of her. Her influence will be felt for years to come. She impressed us so much, we purchased an interest in her sire, TRM BIG T44B MISSILE
3124. His impact has been without measure! We have several herd sires from TRM and have had great success. If you have never been to the Dixieland Delight, you need to go!
We have been blessed to meet, know, and become lifelong friends with many deeply influential and helpful people. Some have
gone on to glory, but their impact will not be forgotten. Thank you all for what you have done for us. It will never be forgotten.
